It really varies tremendously. It will take some homework. You can look up photographers on myspace, in BackStage, or in The Entertainment Sourcebook, among other sources. Try to figure out a style you like, meet with the photographer to communicate your needs, and see if you are comfortable. If you aren’t, it will show in the pics.
If you are really strapped financially, you may be able to find a talented student photographer who can do some good shots at a reasonable price.
Make sure you are clear with the photographer on copyright and credit, if styling//hair is included, and retouching (if any). Take several clothing options.
With the shoot, and printing costs, it will cost at least 2 or 3 hundred, most likely more.
P.S.-Also find out what the agents and casting directors in your area like (border/no border, glossy/matte, color/black-and-white.) The preference can vary in different markets.
I cant tell you an exact amount but i know that they were $1000+ when my friend got his done in NY. He had some done in TX but when he moved everyone said that he needed them done there? Which didnt make sense to me. Im sure you could call some photographers in the phonebook and ask them their prices and stuff. Also, there are tons of perfomers in NY, just ask someone, most people have their headshots done and can recommend someone to you=) GOODLUCK!!!
